How to Close a Forex Trade on MT5 PC
Closing a trade sounds simple. It’s not always. Plenty of new traders freeze up at the wrong moment — either holding too long, or fumbling through unfamiliar menus while the market moves against them. If you’re just getting started and want to know how to close a forex trade on MT5 PC without the confusion, here’s exactly how it works.
Step 1: Open the MT5 Terminal and Find Your Positions
Launch the MetaTrader 5 desktop app and log into your account. At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see the Toolbox window — click the Trade tab. That’s your command center. Every open position sits here: currency pair, trade size, entry price, current profit or loss, stop-loss, take-profit. All of it, at a glance.
Step 2: Pick the Trade You Want to Exit
Scan your open positions and find the one you want out of. Say you’re in a EUR/USD trade that’s hit your target — great, time to lock in those gains. Or maybe the market shifted and you’d rather cut your losses now than hope for a reversal. Either way, identify the position before doing anything else.
Step 3: Open the Close Position Window
Here’s where it gets straightforward. Double-click directly on the position in the Trade tab — that opens the Order window. Don’t want to double-click? Right-click instead, then select “Close Position” from the dropdown. Both routes get you to the same place: a window showing the full details of that specific trade.
Worth mentioning — brokers like Weltrade, which supports both MT5 and MT4, offer platform guides on their site if you want a deeper walkthrough. You can find out more directly through them.
Step 4: Hit Close and Confirm
Inside the order window, there’s a yellow Close button. It shows the current market price and lets you execute immediately. One click. MT5 processes the order at live market prices, the position drops off your Trade tab, and it moves into your account history. Done.
To double-check everything went through, head to the History tab in the Toolbox window. It logs every completed trade — useful for spotting patterns in what’s working and what isn’t.
Why traders close when they do
The reasons vary more than you’d think:
- Profit target reached
- Stop-loss triggered
- Trend reversal spotted
- Big economic news incoming (non-farm payrolls, interest rate decisions)
- Portfolio rebalancing or risk adjustments
Sometimes it’s disciplined strategy. Sometimes it’s gut instinct. Usually it’s a mix of both.
The whole process on MT5 takes about ten seconds once you know where to look. Access the Trade tab, find your position, open the order window, click Close. That’s it. Weltrade’s platform handles this on both desktop and mobile, so you’re not locked to your computer if you need to exit a trade on the move.
Master the exit. The entry gets all the attention, but knowing when — and how — to get out is what separates disciplined traders from the rest.
