Easy Mistakes to Make When Moving Home

Post by : Elliot Preece on 06.11.2019

It is a simple fact that moving home is one of the most stressful experiences we can put ourselves through. On top of trying to keep life as normal as possible while moving, there is the chance you can make some pretty easy mistakes. Here are some of the best things you could accidentally do when trying to make your move as clear as possible.

Leave Everything Until the Last Minute

Whether you are just moving yourself or you have a whole family to move, the temptation can be to leave everything until the last minute. From busy schedules to an important meeting at work, there are just too many things which can appear to get in your way. You cannot afford to let such things get in your way; the move has to be the most important thing in your life at that moment. If you’re finding that you’re getting overwhelmed, it might be a wise idea to write a list of all the things you need to do. From getting in contact with a company like CarsArrive Auto Relocation if you need to ship your car, to ordering moving boxes and packing tape, a list will give you structure and make sure you’re not forgetting anything.

Consider taking some time off work so you know that everything will get done. Taking three days off for the day before, the move itself, and one day to sort yourself out in the new place is all you need.

Overly Clutter

Moving can be difficult because it can require you to take everything which you usually keep safe behind closed doors and come up with some way to move it correctly. This can be extremely difficult; especially if you have something bulky like a lot of books to move. You will also find yourself packing up things like clothes, toiletries, and household items like mugs and pans. It can often be a bit of a challenge to decide what can be kept out to be packed at the last moment.

Your home can quickly fill with belongings and clutter and it can be difficult to live amongst the mess. For this reason, it is sometimes a good idea to have a look for short term storage. This should be high up on your moving house checklist as it will allow you to move some of your bulky furniture or your belongings to get them out of the way and give you a little more space within your home.

Forget to Move Your Services

So, you have made it to the new place with all your belongings intact? Congratulations! However, you can’t just unpack and get ready to decide where things are going to go and leave the moving process behind you. You cannot forget to ring around your services and make sure that your address is updated or you might be facing some big bills and potential fines.

Make a list of all the services you need to pay for. At a minimum, they should be council tax, broadband, utilities like electricity, entertainment like the TV licence, and your banking. You are going to need to update your address with each of these so they know where to find you. This will also allow them to cancel any payments for your other address. Don’t also forget to inform the relevant government authorities like the electoral register and the DVLA.

You may also want to plan the re-installation of your gas furniture, tv aerials, and any other furniture or appliances that will require the expertise of a professional. Reach out to service providers in your new area before you actually make the move. That way, you will have fewer things to worry about while settling into your new home.

Get Overstressed

A move is never going to be easy but one of the biggest pitfalls you can fall into is becoming overstressed. You need to make sure that you are in control of everything to make sure that the move is as successful as possible. Take the time to explore your options fully and always leave a few opportunities to relax and take your mind away from the move. Living amongst boxes for so long can take a serious toll on your mental health, especially if you like everything to be neat and ordered, so try to keep the move as positive an experience as you can.
